Memorial Day can carry mixed emotions: festive beach parties and backyard gatherings on one hand, solemn remembrance on the other. But perhaps the two aren't so mismatched after all.

The laughter of children and neighbors chatting easily over fences — these are examples of freedoms our fallen service members gave their lives to protect. Recognizing that connection gives the holiday its meaning, and leaves us with a question to carry into the rest of the year: Are we doing enough to further strengthen the communities they died for?
